2023 is our third year having a garden. Last year we tripled the size and installed a much better fence and watering system. This year we are focusing on using varieties of plants that are favorable for our Oklahoma soil and conditions. We purchased varieties recommended by the Oklahoma State Univ. Cooperative Extension service. Last year we ran into obstacles with our crops dying due to the heat, and pests in our particular area prove to be difficult. This year we are also not tilling the garden, but instead are going to loosen the soil only for the carrots. We are also installing a little house for our resident rooster to keep him safe from the great horned owls at night. He is our bug control expert. Last year we finally figured out that a rooster (who kept getting in) was the best bug control measure ever! Too bad he was eaten when we kept him in there one night. This year we are also using shredded cardboard as our main mulch (Thanks Amazon), and we are ready to fight the squash borers with some well placed aluminum foil. This year we are also going to expand our use of soil fabric to help control weeds, and we are starting much earlier on planting by starting our plants inside in a sunny window. Wish us luck!!!
