About this Garden Plan

This is the grand plan- this garden is for food, medicinal & cooking herbs, and pollinators. This year I only built the beds from 41' to 67'. I hope to expand next year, mainly to grow berries. My spouse and I haven't had full time work since March so we spent as little as possible. I live in a rural area with lots of deer, moose, elk, moles, etc so deer fencing around everything was essential. And raised beds with hardware cloth underneath deters moles. I still need to install drip irrigation but I've done it before with raised beds and I still have a lot of supplies so hopefully I won't have to spend much money.

 California Blackeye Cowpeas
105"11" x 1' 1"Cowpea California Blackeye grow to be bushy plants that produce 7-inch long green pods. These long pods are filled with tender and delicious greenish-white peas marked with a prominent black eye. They are the most popular of all southern pea varieties. Flavor: Creamy texture and delicious flavor Preparation Ideas: Use as green shell peas or dry winter beans Plant Type: Vegetable Fill Weight (grams): 21 Grows Best In: Full Sun Days to Germination: 7-10 Days Days to Maturity: 80 Days Growth Type: Bush Planting Depth: 1" Seed Spacing: 3'/3" Instructions: Sow directly in the garden in full sun after the soil warms. Plant 2 seeds every 3 inches. Thin to 1 plant every 3 inches when they have 4 leaves. Keep the soil moist to encourage growth. Suggestions: For healthy vines, don't plant southern peas on the same ground year after year. For dried peas, let the pods mature and dry on the vines. Recommended for warm climate areas.
Beans (Dry)
 Dragon Tongue
811"2' 3" x 2' 3"Dragon tongue bean can be harvested, picked and used for their pods as well as for their seeds like a green bean (snap bean) or allowed to mature into a shell bean for using their seeds only SCIENTIFIC NAME: Phaseolus vulgaris CULTURE: Choose well-drained soil with a pH range of 6.56.8. After last frost date sow seeds about 2" apart, 1" deep, in rows 2036" apart. Optimum soil temperature for germination is 7090°F (2132°C). Plant when daytime soil temperatures average at least 60°F (16°C), or risk poor germination. Inoculants can increase yields. For a continuous supply, make successive sowings every 2-3 weeks through midsummer. Dark-colored seeds germinate better in cool soil than white seeds. DISEASES: Plow under or remove and compost bean straw in the fall to hasten destruction of most disease organisms. For Sclerotinia spp. (white mold) control, plant at wider row spacing to promote drying of plant leaves and soil. Practice a 3-year crop rotation, preferably into corn or grain crops. All our bush bean seeds are produced in areas known to be free of halo blight. INSECT PESTS: Mexican bean beetles can be controlled with insecticides such as pyrethrin or azadarachtin. To harvest for dry beans: Leave drying pods on the plants as long as you can, but harvest them before a period of prolonged rain. If damp weather sets in just when your beans should be drying, pull up the plants and hang them upside down in a dry place until the beans are dry enough to pick and sort.
